What & how is Ishikawa Seminar?

Before the beginning of every semester, junior and senior students have a chance to join a seminar. In this entry, I state basic policies and what to study in my seminar.(各セメスターの前に、三年生及び四年生はゼミに入れる機会があります。

In my seminar, you study economic theory or econometric analysis based on professional publications. When you join my seminar, I ask you what your interest is. Following your interest, I assign some technical papers related to your interest to each of you.

Your interest is not necessarily related with economics, Indeed, past students chose various topics such as sports, travel, Artificial intelligence, marketing and so on. This is because it is possible to analyze such topics in the framework of Economics.(みなさんの興味は必ずしも経済学である必要はありません。

However, when I ask you the interest, your answers are usually ambiguous. If you said your interest is sports, I cannot identify what your interest really is. This is because we can discuss it from any aspects like investment by sponsors, contract between players and a team, and so on. So, I will ask you to find the data you are interested in. Then, I will be able to identify your interest.(しかしながら、私がみなさんに興味を尋ねると、おおよそみなさんの答えは曖昧です。

Economic Knowledge to join my seminar:
I wrote how to study economics in SILS in this blog. So, I believe that it is the best way to follow it for the students. In this seminar, we do not use textbooks of economics, but read professional papers/advanced surveys of fields because we can see or feel how researchers struggle with some difficulty to discover or how new fields develop.(SILSにおける経済学の勉強の方法については、このBlogで書いています。

Therefore, students need to study basic economic knowledge for themselves. Since SILS is school of liberal arts, you don't have to take economic classes before joining seminar. However, at least, you need to make efforts to fill in the gaps. For instance, I strongly recommend to study the following topics before the beginning the seminar:(それゆえに、みなさんは基本的な経済学の知識を独力で勉強する必要があります。

  • How to derive demand functions given consumers' utility functions;(消費者の効用関数が与えられた時に、需要関数をどのように導くか)
  • What is the definition of Nash equilibrium and how to calculate mixed Nash equilibrium in two-person games.(ナッシュ均衡の定義と2人ゲームにおける混合戦略ナッシュ均衡の計算の仕方)
If you have some energy left after the above, you should try to study (i) basic econometrics and (ii) how to derive market equilibrium in a two-agent exchange economy.(もし上記に加えて余裕があれば、(i)基本的な計量経済学 (ii)二人の交換経済における市場均衡の導出の仕方を勉強してみてください。)

The above seems to make unreasonable demands, but what is important is your attitude to study economics of undergrad level by yourself. It is possible because there are so many textbooks to study economics by yourself and some classes of economics in SILS. Naturally I support you to work well in the better ways(これらは過度な要求に見えるかもしれませんが、重要なことは自分で大学レベルの経済学を学ぼうとする姿勢です。

You should not expect that you study basic economics in the seminar, but should expect that you study higher levels and we discuss them each other.

Basic Policy to operate my seminar:
The grading of this seminar is truly based on your performance. You are asked to have some presentations each semester. Naturally your credit is not guaranteed even when you have presentations. You need to prepare it as much as possible.(ゼミの成績はみなさんのゼミでのパフォーマンスできまります。

It is OK when you have something to understand in your presentation. The important point is how you struggle with the difficulty, and how you devise to get it understood.

If you don't have enough preparation, all of the members fool away the time. In particular, the final year before the graduation is valuable. So whether we fool away time is due to your preparations. You need to keep it in your heart.(もし十分な発表の準備ができなかった場合、参加者全ての時間を浪費してしまいます。

You are naturally expected to attend the seminar even when you don't have presentations. So, don't be absent from the seminar without valid reason. If you have valid reason, email it to me before the seminar. It is not a rule of the seminar, but one of the social norms.(みなさんは、発表のないときでも当然ゼミへの出席が期待されます。

Let's enjoy studying economics!

Presentation of Professional articles

The students in my seminar are asked to present professional articles in order to write their theses. When you present an article/a paper, you should explain it as follows: What is the motivation & new finding: Basic Model: The main theorem/finding following the model: Conclusion or Final remarks. Any professional articles must include new findings. So, whenever you read them, you need to focus on what the new findings are, why they are important, & what the deferences from the previous works are. Usually those are explained in Introduction of each paper. However, even when you know them through introduction, it is just intuitive explanations. So after understanding the motivations, results, and the importance, you carefully read to know how to derive the results by the models and econometric analysis. In the above sense, even when you understand the importance of papers through Introduction, we do not usually say that you read the papers. So, when you prepare

What subjects of Economics SILS offers.

SILS offers some subjects in Economics. The subjects opened in 2017 are listed in the bottom. As emphasized before, Economics basically consists of Micro & Macro economic theory and Econometrics. And, if you decide to study economics, you should step the introduction level to study effectively. Unfortunately, SILS does not offer econometrics in intermediate level. You should study it for yourself. Since Econometrics uses some math & statistics, it may be good to join Quantitative method for Economics though it is introduction level. After that, the following textbooks are useful to study econometrics: 山本拓「 計量経済学 」日本評論社 J. H. Stock & M. W. Watson (著)  Introduction to Econometrics  (Pearson). I guess the latter is a little bit more difficult, but it is marginal. Recent development of econometrics enables us to examine causality relations among data. But this is advanced. Before studying it, you need study basic econometrics such as linear regressions. If you are i
